Yahweh Is Holy

1 ThenYahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 “Speak to all the community of the Israelites,and say to them, ‘Youmust be holy, because I, Yahweh yourGod, am holy.

3 Each of you must revere your motherand your father,and youmust keep my Sabbaths; I am Yahweh yourGod.

4 Youmust not turn to idols, and youmust not make for yourselves gods of cast metal; I am Yahweh yourGod.

5 “ ‘And when yousacrifice a sacrifice of fellowship offerings to Yahweh, youmust sacrifice it for youracceptance.

6 It must be eaten on the day of yoursacrifice and the next day; butthe remainder must be burned up in the fire by the third day.

7 And if it is indeed eaten on the third day, it is unclean meat; it shall not be regarded as accepted.

8 And the one who eats it shall bear his guilt, because he has profaned Yahweh’s holiness, and that person shall be cut off from his people.

Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

9 “ ‘And at yourreaping the harvest of yourland youmust not finish reaping the edge of yourfield, and youmust not glean the remnants of yourharvest.

10 And youmust not glean yourvineyard, and youmust not gather yourvineyard’s fallen grapes; youmust leave them behind for the needy and for the alien; I am Yahweh yourGod.

11 “ ‘Youshall not steal, and youshall not deceive, and youshall not lie to one another;

12 and youshall not swear falselyin my name, and so one of youprofanethe name of yourGod; I am Yahweh.

13 “ ‘Youshall not exploit yourneighbor, and youshall not rob him; a hired worker’s wage youshall not withholdovernight until morning.

14 Youshall not curse the deaf, and youshall not put a stumbling block beforea blind person, butyoushall revere yourGod; I am Yahweh.

15 “ ‘Youshall not do injustice in judgment; youshall not show partiality to the powerless;youshall not give preference to the powerful;youshall judge yourfellow citizen with justice.

16 Youshall not go about with slander among yourpeople; youshall not endanger yourneighbor’s life;I am Yahweh.

17 “ ‘Youshall not hate yourbrother in yourheart; youshall surely rebuke yourfellow citizen, so that youdo not incur sin along withhim.

18 Youshall not seek vengeance, and youshall not harbor a grudge against yourfellow citizens;and youshall love yourneighbor like yourself;I am Yahweh.

You Shall Keep My Statutes

19 “ ‘Youmust keep my statutes: as for yourdomestic animals, youshall not cause two differing kinds to breed; as for yourfield, youshall not sow two differing kinds of seed; and, a garment of two differing kinds of woven material should not be worn on you.

20 “ ‘And when a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen and she is a female slave promised to a man, butshe indeed has not been ransomed or freedom has not be given to her, there shall be an obligation to compensate; they shall not be put to death, because she has not been freed.

21 And he shall bring his guilt offering to Yahweh at the tent of assembly’s entrance: a ram for a guilt offering.

22 And the priest shall make atonement for him beforeYahweh with the ram of the guilt offering for his sin that he committed,and so his sin that he committedshall be forgiven him.

23 “ ‘And when youhave come into the land and youplant any tree forfood, youshall regard its fruit as unharvestable;for three years it shall be forbidden for you;it shall not be eaten.

24 Butin the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, offerings of praise for Yahweh.

25 And in the fifth year youshall eat its fruit to increase its yield for you;I am Yahweh yourGod.

26 “ ‘Youmust not eat anything with the blood; youshall not practice divination, nor shall youinterpret signs.

27 Youshall not round off the corner hair of yourhead, and youshall not trim the corner of yourbeard.

28 And youshall not make a slash in yourbody for a dead person, nor shall youmake on yourselves a tattoo’s mark; I am Yahweh.

29 “ ‘Youshall not profane yourdaughter by making her a prostitute, lest the land be prostituted and the land fill up with depravity.

30 Youshall keep my Sabbaths, and youshall revere my sanctuary; I am Yahweh.

31 “ ‘Youshall not turn to the mediums and to the soothsayers; youshall not seek them to become unclean with them; I am Yahweh yourGod.

32 “ ‘Beforeold age youshall get up, and youshall show respect for an old person; and youshall revere your God; I am Yahweh.

33 “ ‘And when an alien dwells with youin yourland, youshall not oppress him.

34 The alien who is dwelling with youshall be like a native among you,and youshall love him like yourself,because youwere aliens in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh yourGod.

35 “ ‘Youshall not commit injustice in regulation, in measurement, in weight, orvolume.

36 Youmust have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin; I am Yahweh yourGod who brought youout from the land of Egypt.

37 “ ‘Thus youshall keep all my statutes and all my regulations, and youshall do them; I am Yahweh.’ ”
